Eddie Murphy returning as Axel Foley for Beverly Hills Cop 4 at Netflix

November 14, 2019 by Gary Collinson

After revisiting Coming to America for the upcoming sequel, Eddie Murphy will be returning to another of his classic 80s characters as Axel Foley returns to duty for the long-awaited Beverly Hills Cop 4.

As per Deadline, Netflix has struck a deal with rights holders Paramount to produce a fourth instalment in the action comedy series, with the option of a fifth should it prove successful.

Murphy – who previously teamed with Netflix for the acclaimed Rudy Ray Moore biopic Dolemite Is My Name – will reunite with producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the new movie, although there’s no word yet on a director or any other possible returning actors from the first three movies.

There’s been talk of a fourth Beverly Hills Cop movie since the mid-90s, with Brett Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand) attached to direct at one point in the mid-2000s. Plans for the sequel were temporarily shelved back in 2011 in favour of a TV series focussing on Axel’s son Aaron Foley, with Murphy making a cameo appearance in the pilot, although CBS decided not to pick it up.

The last we heard on Beverly Hills Cop 4, Belgian writer-directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah (Bad Boys For Life) had boarded the project as directors, although it seems they are no longer involved as Deadline reports that Netflix will work with Murphy and Bruckheimer to get a script and director in place for the new film.
