Crimson Peak bombs at the US box office with just $12.8 million

October 19, 2015 by Luke Owen

After a slew of mediocre reviews (read ours here and here), Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak struggled out of the gates on its opening weekend.

Opening in less than 3,000 screens, the Gothic horror movie pulled in a very disappointing $12.5 million, coming fourth behind Steven Spielberg’s Bride of Spies, The Martian and children’s horror Goosebumps. Worse still, the film suffered from a very rapid day-to-day decline, opening to £5.2 million on Friday and falling to $2.6 million by Sunday. And with a CinemaScore of B-, Crimson Peak could find itself out of the top 10 next weekend when newcomers Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension and The Last Witch Hunter open.

Crimson Peak also opened in 55 other territories and added another $13.5 million to its worldwide total ($1 million of which came from IMAX screenings), but with a budget of $55 million, Crimson Peak will struggle to recuperate all of its costs.

Crimson Peak is out now, with a cast that includes Jessica Chastain (Interstellar), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Tom Hiddleston (Thor: The Dark World) and Mia Wasikowska (Maps to the Stars).
