Disney’s Frozen 2 scores huge second weekend, pushes global haul to $739 million

December 2, 2019 by Amie Cranswick

After scoring a record global opening for an animated movie, Disney’s Frozen II has now went on to enjoy one of the biggest ever second weekends at the box office, pushing its global tally to a whopping $739 million after just ten days on release.

Domestically, Frozen II earned $85.2 million over the Friday to Sunday period, down just 34.5% from its opening weekend. That’s the second-lowest drop ever for a movie opening with $100 million plus after Shrek 2’s 33% back in 2004, and it’s also the highest non-opening weekend for an animated movie, topping Incredibles 2’s $80 million.

With very little in the way of competition for Frozen II until the release of Jumanji: The Next Level on December 13th, it seems all but certain that the movie will join the $1 billion club, and if it can show legs during the holiday period it may well challenge its predecessors $1.276 billion haul.

Whether it manages to do that or not, it’s already become Disney Animation’s highest-grossing animated sequel – a record previously held by Ralph Breaks the Internet on $529 million.

Frozen 2 sees Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Jonathan Groff returning to voice the characters of Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff alongside Frozen newcomers Evan Rachel Wood and Sterling K. Brown.
