Comic Book Review – The Red Mother #2

January 16, 2020 by Calum Petrie

Calum Petrie reviews The Red Mother #2…

In this strange and supernatural comic series, our protagonist has been through an extremely interesting and horrific set of events. Not only has her picturesque life been turned upside down, but Daisy has had to deal with her boyfriend Luke disappearing right in front of her eyes – then one of said eyes being torn out by some supernatural force.

The second issue picks up with Daisy coming to terms with life after the incident, and the people trying to force themselves into her life to make sure she is OK, while not being there when she needs them. The dynamic of the boyfriend’s disappearance plays into this issue when it comes to clearing out his apartment and seeing his brother’s grief as well. Daisy knows that Luke’s disappearance is touching many more people than just herself, while also piecing together what the hell actually happened that night.

The extremely interesting part of the story is when Daisy’s vision turns red, then she starts to see a mysterious figure that terrifies her to her core. The mysterious figure looks somewhat like Ryuk from Death Note, and a vision of Luke at the foot of the bed alerts Daisy to someone known as “The Red Mother”. The pieces are starting to fall into place.

The fact that there has been a slow build up of story line rather than issue #1 being saturated with too much information is interesting, while frustrating at the same time. While issue #2 is not releasing too much information about The Red Mother herself, I very much look forward to seeing where this series goes next with its horror/supernatural tones and outstanding artwork.

Rating – 7/10
