The New Mutants producer explains where the film fits into Fox’s X-Men timeline

January 22, 2020 by Liam Waddington

After years of delays, The New Mutants is finally on-track and set for release in April to bring a close to Fox’s X-Men universe. While we don’t have to wait long, producer Karen Rosenfelt has spoken out in an interview with Digital Spy regarding when the film takes place in the timeline.

“It’s contemporary timeless,” said Rosenfelt. “We don’t define where we are, but it is today. It’s contemporary. It’s not way in the future and it’s not in the past.”

Rosenfelt continued to explain The New Mutants is following in the footsteps of Deadpool, where the film is taking place in its own signature timeline.

“I think it’s safe to say,” she added. “But again, what we’re striving for, as they did with Deadpool, is what Fox and Simon [Kinberg] are doing with each of the franchises in the X-Men universe is making them all signature unique.”

20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.

The New Mutants is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) and features a cast includes Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Illyana Rasputin/Magik, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Sam Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as Dr. Cecilia Reyes. It is set for release on April 3rd 2020.
