Mark Hamill jokes about real reason for Star Wars’ galactic civil war

February 6, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Mark Hamill, legend of the Star Wars franchise, has joked about what the actual reason for A New Hope’s galactic civil war was.

Through the prequels and subsequent material, we have come to learn a great deal about the war we see taking place between the Empire and Rebellion in A New Hope but Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), says there could be a more straight forward reason for its inclusion.

Responding to a Twitter question, Mark Hamill says that although he hasn’t seen it in a while, he thinks the war was just a helpful plot device: “It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but I always thought the war was just an excuse to provide a much needed conflict for an action-adventure movie. That, and to blow a bunch of stuff up, of course.”

The Star Wars universe has an incredibly deep and fascinating lore at this stage so Hamill’s tongue-in-cheek explanation isn’t going to quite cut it for die-hard fans of the franchise, even if it’s true (from a certain point of view).
