Fast & Furious 9 pre-sales up 50% on The Fate of the Furious as trailer pulls in huge views

February 10, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Last year’s Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw may not have quite managed to reach the financial heights of recent instalments in the franchise (the spinoff grossing a still-solid $760 million), but early indications suggest that Fast & Furious 9 is on track to deliver one of the biggest entries in the series.

Tickets for the F9: The Fast Saga went on sale this past Friday, and according to Deadline domestic pre-sales for the sequel are 50% ahead of The Fate of the Furious and up a whopping 400% on Hobbs & Shaw.

The Fate of the Furious opened with $98.8 million in North America back in 2017, but managed a then-record $532 million global opening on its way to a worldwide haul of $1.24 billion – the series’ second-best return after Furious 7’s $1.516 billion.

Fan excitement for F9 was certainly reflected in performance of last week’s trailer, which amassed 151 million views across YouTube, Facebook and Twitter in its first 24 hours and almost 500 million views in its first five days online.

No matter how fast you are, no one outruns their past. Vin Diesel’s Dom Toretto is leading a quiet life off the grid with Letty and his son, little Brian, but they know that danger always lurks just over their peaceful horizon. This time, that threat will force Dom to confront the sins of his past if he’s going to save those he loves most. His crew joins together to stop a world-shattering plot led by the most skilled assassin and high-performance driver they’ve ever encountered: a man who also happens to be Dom’s forsaken brother, Jakob (John Cena, next year’s The Suicide Squad).

Fast & Furious 9 sees Justin Lin directing series veterans Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren, along with franchise newcomers John Cena (Bumblebee), Finn Cole (Peaky Blinders), Anna Sawai (Ninja Assassin), Vinnie Bennett (Ghost in the Shell), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy), Cardi B (Hustlers), MMA fighter Francis Ngannou, and singer Ozuna.
