Rian Johnson provides an insider tip for spotting a secret movie villain

February 27, 2020 by Samuel Brace

Rian Johnson, director of Knives Out, has revealed that Apple’s rules about iPhones in movies can help audiences discover mystery villains.

Films often try to trick us into who the villain of the story might be, often revealing the truth to audiences towards the end of the movie. However, with Rian Johnson’s insider tip, you can figure it out quicker.

Johnson revealed that because Apple don’t let villains use iPhones in movies, you can rule out characters who use them and raise suspicion against those who don’t. Speaking to Vanity Fair he said:

“Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies but, and this is very pivotal if you’re ever watching a mystery movie, bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera. Every single filmmaker who has a bad guy in their movie that’s supposed to be a secret wants to murder me right now.”

Johnson is right, letting this secret out probably won’t make him very popular! But at least we can have fun studying characters’ phones. Will this also help us discover the villain in Knives Out 2?

Acclaimed writer and director Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper, The Last Jedi) pays tribute to mystery mastermind Agatha Christie in KNIVES OUT, a fun, modern-day murder mystery where everyone is a suspect. When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death. With an all-star ensemble cast including Chris Evans, Ana De Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Don Johnson, Michael Shannon, Toni Collette, LaKeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT is a witty and stylish whodunit guaranteed to keep audiences guessing until the very end.
