Law & Order: SVU makes television history with three year renewal

February 28, 2020 by EJ Moreno

The long-running cop drama Law & Order is going to continue its historical run as Universal Television and creator Dick Wolf has penned a massive television deal.

Already on its record-breaking 21st season, NBC has given Law & Order: SVU a new three-year renewal for Seasons 22, 23, and 24. This renewal will push it further ahead than its previous record mark of 20 seasons set by original series Law & Order (1990-2010) and classic show Gunsmoke (1955-75). It looks like SVU will remain TV’s longest-running primetime live-action series.

The news comes as part of a new deal that creator Dick Wolf has signed with Universal Television; it also includes a three-year renewal for the three Chicago dramas (Chicago Fire, Chicago PD, and Chicago Med). The new deal for Wolf also includes multiple series commitments for new shows across NBC’s growing platforms.

The producer signed a new five-year, nine-figure deal spanning both broadcast and streaming services. This deal will keep Wolf Entertainment at Universal Television, a company he’s made a home for 36 years. The news also follows the nine-figure deal NBCUniversal’s streamer Peacock recently made for the majority of Wolf’s catalog. That catalog includes Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med — all of which will available at launch.
