Todd McFarlane implies that Jamie Foxx has left Spawn

March 10, 2020 by EJ Moreno

After years of trying to get the project off the ground, Spawn’s creator has seemingly run into another hurdle with his long-planned movie reboot.

Todd McFarlane has spoken frequently about trying to get a new version of Spawn to the big screen; he’s brought up everything from demanding he direct to the difficulties in securing financing for his hard-R rated plans. And now it seems like he’ll be looking for a new actor to star in the film, as McFarlane has hinted that Jamie Foxx has left the project.

As initially reported, Foxx had signed on to play the titular character, with Jeremy Renner portraying Detective Twitch. But things have changed, according to what McFarlane has told gaming magazine, Shoryuken.

“Last week I got some discouraging news, we had an Academy Award-winning guy who was going to do the movie with us, but he fell off,” said McFarlane.

While there is no official confirmation as to who McFarlane is referring to, Jaime Foxx won the “Best Actor” Academy Award in 2004 for the film Ray. This could potentially be a big blow to McFarlane’s plans to realise the project as losing an actor of that calibre could halt the whole thing.

“We had people willing to fund the movie as long as we had this guy attached but schedules were conflicting, and things had to change,” adds McFarlane. “That’s how close we are to getting this thing off the ground.”
