Andy Serkis on taking on the iconic role of Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman

May 11, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Andy Serkis will add another big franchise to his C.V. next year as he takes on the role of Bruce Wayne’s faithful butler, friend and father figure Alfred Pennyworth in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, and the actor has been chatting to LadBible about stepping into the shoes of the iconic Bat-Family character in the upcoming DC reboot.

“[Michael Caine] was fantastic, his Alfred was legendary, I couldn’t even begin to go there, really,” said Serkis. “You find it for yourself. It’s like playing these iconic roles in Shakespeare, you go back, you revisit them and you have to make it your own, and see what it is about he character that connects with you and your personal Venn diagram.”

Serkis also went on to discuss how the film is “very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the centre of it. And it is a really exquisite script that Matt has written.”

Production on The Batman is currently on hiatus due to the global health crisis, with Serkis revealing that he was about half way through shooting his scenes before the shutdown. He’s keeping himself busy however, as he’s also hard at work on his next directorial effort, Sony’s Marvel sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.

The Batman sees Robert Pattinson (The Lighthouse) donning the cape and cowl as Bruce Wayne/Batman alongside Zoe Kravitz (Big Little Lies) as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Colin Farrell (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) as Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin, Paul Dano (Escape at Dannemora) as Edward Nashton/The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis (War for the Planet of the Apes) as Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro (The Big Lebowski) as Carmine Falcone, Alex Ferns (Chernobyl) as Commissioner Pete Savage, Con O’Neill (Ordinary Lies) as Chief Mackenzie Bock, Peter Sarsgaard (The Killing) as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson and Jayme Lawson (Farewell Amor) as Bella Real.
