Video Review – Da 5 Bloods (2020)

June 12, 2020 by EJ Moreno

EJ Moreno reviews the new Spike Lee Joint, Da 5 Bloods…

Spike Lee is back with another powerful, thought-provoking film. This time, he tackles PTSD and the Vietnam War with Da 5 Bloods. Going straight to Netflix allows Spike Lee to create one of his most experimental and brutal films in quite some time. There’s a freedom to the filmmaking that puts this at the top of anyone’s ranking of Lee’s work. Also, let’s get the Academy Award ready for Delroy Lindo, who delivers a masterclass here.

From Academy Award® Winner Spike Lee comes a New Joint: the story of four African-American Vets — Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) — who return to Vietnam. Searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader (Chadwick Boseman) and the promise of buried treasure, our heroes, joined by Paul’s concerned son (Jonathan Majors), battle forces of Man and Nature — while confronted by the lasting ravages of The Immorality of The Vietnam War.

Da 5 Bloods features a cast that includes Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis, Isiah Whitlock, Chadwick Boseman, Jonathan Majors, Mélanie Thierry, Paul Walter Hauser, Jasper Pääkkönen, Johnny Trí Nguyễn, Lê Y Lan, Nguyễn Ngọc Lâm, Sandy Hương Phạm, and Jean Reno.
