Watchmen: Damon Lindelof says it would be a “betrayal” to return for a second season after Emmy win

September 22, 2020 by Liam Waddington

During the recent 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, Damon Lindelof’s DC adaptation Watchmen took home the most awards with eleven, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Outstanding Lead Actress (Regina King), and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited Series (Yahya-Abdul Mateen II).

Now, in a backstage interview with Deadline, Lindelof has reiterated his current stance that he won’t be returning to helm a possible second season of HBO’s Watchmen as it would now feel like a “huge betrayal” following the show’s success at the Emmy Awards.

“It would feel like a huge betrayal of winning limited series to come back and say ‘it was only a limited series’,” Lindelof said.

However, the series creator didn’t shoot down the idea of someone else continuing the story of Watchmen in the future, especially since he was already working with a world created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

“Watchmen is something I’ve loved since I was 13 years old. Someone else created it, and this was my run on it. I’ve invited any other artist who wants to take the baton,” said Lindelof sticking to his guns.

Although Damon Lindelof won’t be returning, could the Watchmen limited series lead actress winner Regina King take over the second season? During a virtual backstage Emmy press room about her fourth Emmy win with Deadline, she revealed she has no plans of taking control of Watchmen for a potential second season as she would only return if Lindelof was to continue on with the series.

“If I would do it again, it would be with Damon. So there’s no conversation about a future of Watchmen just right now. It’s just about settling and enjoying this strange moment,” King said. “We’re coming to a close on this chapter of the Watchmen series. It’s bittersweet and emotional.”

Do you think there will be a second season of Watchmen? Are you disappointed that Damon Lindelof is walking away from this universe? Let us know on Facebook or Twitter @flickeringmyth…
