Henry Cavill “would absolutely jump at the opportunity” to play James Bond

October 1, 2020 by Gary Collinson

While his future as the Man of Steel remains up in the air, it appears that Henry Cavill already has one eye on another franchise, with the British actor revealing to GQ that he “would absolutely jump at the opportunity” to succeed Daniel Craig as 007 in the James Bond franchise after No Time To Die.

“If Barbara [Bond producer Barbara Broccoli] and Mike [co-producer Michael G. Wilson] were interested in that, I would absolutely jump at the opportunity,” said Cavill. “At this stage, it’s all up in the air. We’ll see what happens. But yes, I would love to play Bond, it would be very, very exciting.”

Although rumours continue to swirl that Tom Hardy has already secured the role, major question marks remain about that claim. As yet, no reputable sources have been able to verify the report, and given that Hardy is already 43 years old – just two years younger than Roger Moore was when he became the oldest actor to be cast as Bond at 45 – it would seem his time as a potential Bond may have passed.

Cavill on the other hand is six years Hardy’s junior, and could therefore feasibly squeeze in another one or two outings. He’s also already came close to securing the role in the past, having been director Martin Campbell’s preferred choice to replace Pierce Brosnan for 2006’s Casino Royale when he was just 22 years old. However, Campbell was overruled by the producers, who opted instead for Daniel Craig.

It’s not unknown for the Bond producers to return to an earlier candidate; Pierce Brosnan had been lined up by producer Albert R. Broccoli to inherit the role from Roger Moore for 1987’s The Living Daylights, only for his TV commitments to force him to pass. As we know however, Brosnan would get his license to kill some eight years later when he replaced Timothy Dalton for 1995’s GoldenEye.
