Bill Murray, Sean Penn and Chris Hemsworth lead 2015’s box office flops

November 25, 2015 by Sara Hemrajani

They may be some of Hollywood’s biggest male stars but the likes of Bill Murray, Sean Penn, Chris Hemsworth and Zac Efron also led this year’s biggest box office flops.

Forbes has published its list of 2015’s least profitable films. The rankings are based on global ticket sales for wide releases up to November against their estimated production costs (excluding marketing, which can run into tens of millions of dollars for blockbusters).

Using those figures, Rock the Kasbah receives the unwelcome honour of offering the lowest returns. The ensemble cast of Bill Murray, Kate Hudson and Zooey Deschanel failed to entice audiences, who were either put off by the premise or the scathing reviews. Despite the relatively cheap price tag of $15 million, Rock the Kasbah had only made $2.9 million till November 18th.

Taking second place is Sean Penn’s shoot ’em up thriller The Gunman, which recouped just over a quarter of its $40 million production budget. It is followed by the Michael Mann-directed, Chris Hemsworth-starring cyber criminal drama Blackhat.

Other notable entries include Universal’s Jem and the Holograms, Self/Less with Ryan Reynolds, stoner action-comedy American Ultra, Zac Efron’s We Are Your Friends and Cameron Crowe’s famously deried Aloha.
