Scream 5 co-director explains how late director Wes Craven influenced the sequel’s violence

November 25, 2020 by Liam Waddington

With the upcoming fifth instalment in the Scream franchise recently wrapping up filming, one of the directors of the film has discussed how the highly-anticipated sequel has approached its violence.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin explained how the film is approaching the violence while taking inspiration from the way the late director Wes Craven approached violence in the previous four instalments.

“Before this on Ready or Not we had this conversation a lot which is like ‘How do we deal with violence?’ The violence in this, one of the big things we got from Wes Craven is the idea that you can never treat violence like it’s happening to someone [else.] It has to always happen to a human being, who has a family, who has loved ones. Who you should care about. And so when you’re in the violence it’s not for jokes, it’s not for humor. Everything around it can be fun, but violence is violence and it should be treated as such,” Bettinelli-Olpin said.

While the passing of Craven has been a major talking point before and during production, Kevin Williamson, who wrote all previous Scream instalments and is serving as executive producer on Scream 5, has stated that he is confident that Craven would have been proud at what directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett have created,

“What I love about the new Scream is that it does take a fresh approach,” Williamson said. “It’s this beautiful sort of fresh new movie, but it also has this nostalgic factor that runs through it. That to me was a perfect blend of how to do the next Scream. So that was what I was most excited about. I’m blown away by the directors, and I was really nervous because nobody is Wes Craven. I was really hesitant to even jump on board and be a part of it, and boy am I glad I did because I think it’s going to make Wes proud.”
