The Directors Guild of America has demanded a meeting with Warner Bros. over 2021 streaming plan

December 10, 2020 by Samuel Brace

According to a new report, the Directors Guild of America has demanded a meeting with Warner Bros. over the studio’s decision to release all of its movies on HBO Max in 2021.

If sources of The Hollywood Reporter are to be believed, the Directors Guild of America isn’t very happy with Warner Bros. for deciding to bring every one of their 2021 movies to HBO Max.

Directors like Christopher Nolan have already publicly criticised the move with reportedly many more directors being angered by the news.

According to THR, the directors guild has sent a strongly worded letter to WB to make their displeasure clear: “Days after WarnerMedia’s Dec. 3 reveal that it would premiere its entire 2021 slate of 17 films — including tentpoles like Godzilla vs. Kong, Dune and The Matrix 4 — on HBO Max the same day the features hit theaters, the Directors Guild of America has sent a sharply worded letter to Warner Bros. CEO Ann Sarnoff demanding a meeting to address its issues with the plan.”

The report says no action has been explicitly threatened but the guild’s opinion of the matter was made abundantly clear. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, if a boycott of WB by directors could take place and if WB even decides to extend their streaming plan beyond 2021 as many industry insiders believe.
