The BBC offers “no comment” on reports that Jodie Whittaker is leaving Doctor Who

January 4, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Late last night, a rumour emerged from the UK tabloid The Daily Mirror claiming that Jodie Whittaker is set to hang up her scarf and call time on her stint as the Thirteenth Doctor in the BBC’s long-running sci-fi series Doctor Who.

According to the report, Whittaker will depart the show in its upcoming thirteenth series, which is currently in production, with an alleged source claiming “It’s all very hush-hush but it is known on set that Jodie is leaving and they are gearing up for a regeneration. Her departure is top secret but at some point over the coming months the arrival of the 14th Doctor will need to be filmed.”

Asked for clarification and/or confirmation of the claims, the BBC issued the following statement, which only served to add fuel to the fire: “We won’t be commenting on any speculation around Jodie’s future on the show.”

Whittaker is the first female to take on the iconic role of the Doctor in the show, having taken over the part from Peter Capaldi in 2018. Should the report prove true, she’ll become the fourth consecutive Doctor to depart the series after three seasons following Capaldi, Matt Smith and David Tennant.
