Elizabeth Olsen says Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is “old Sam Raimi” and “very scary”

July 18, 2021 by Gary Collinson

When the project was first announced back at the 2019 San Diego Comic-Con International, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige pitched Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the MCU’s first “scary movie”, and while it may have lost Sinister helmer Scott Derrickson from the director’s chair in the years since, it’s also brought in a legend of the horror – and superhero – genres in Evil Dead and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi.

In a recent interview following her Emmy nomination for WandaVision, Elizabeth Olsen – who is returning as the Scarlet Witch alongside Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme – shared some words of praise for her director, teasing that Multiverse of Madness is going to serve up some old school Sam Raimi scares:

“Sam Raimi is lovely, and I got to learn a lot from him,” said Olsen (via Comic Book). “It was odd going from WandaVision and bringing this character to a different film that felt more based in the Marvel films… It’s a very scary movie. It’s like old Sam Raimi. He’s trying to create the scariest Marvel movie.”

It shouldn’t be too hard to create the scariest Marvel movie, given that the studio hasn’t really dipped its toes into the horror genre as yet, but bringing Raimi in to steer the franchise in that direction is certainly tantalising.
