Despite slightly disappointing box office returns for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, Lionsgate has recently made it clear that they are interested in continuing the franchise with a number of prequels. The films would bring the series back to its roots and take place in arenas similar to those seen in both 2012’s The Hunger Games and 2013’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Presumably, much of the current cast of The Hunger Games franchise would not return for these films, if they do end up happening, which makes one curious as to what their thoughts on the proposed prequels may be.
During the premiere of her newest film Joy, Katniss Everdeen herself, Jennifer Lawrence, shared her opinion on the studio’s plans while speaking to Variety. She bluntly said, “I wouldn’t be involved. It’s too soon. They need to let the body get cold.”
Lawrence is certainly not the only one who believes that the studio should wait a while before making more films, as a number of fans hold the same opinion.
Mockingjay – Part 2 was released last month and met with mixed to positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Many have made the case that the series lost steam with its final two installments, for the reason that it moved away from the exciting arena action that initially made it popular and more towards a story of rebellion and war.
The most recent installment has grossed over $570 million worldwide, far above its $160 million budget, but is still on track to become the lowest grossing film of the franchise.
