A spin-off of the classic Batman: The Animated Series is coming, and we have brand new information from DC FanDome.
As previously reported, Bruce Timm is returning to the world he created in an update that will likely delight fans. The series is called Batman: Caped Crusader and will be coming to Cartoon Network and HBO Max. Timm is also bringing two heavy-hitter filmmakers to the mixture, with J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves joining to produce the series.
“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” Abrams and Reeves said. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman’s noir roots while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters.”
Per the press release, “Utilizing state-of-the-art animation techniques and technologies available, this powerful creative partnership will once again reinvent Batman and his iconic rogue’s gallery with sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.”
In a video featured at DC FanDome, Timm went on to call Batman: Caped Crusader “more Batman: The Animated Series than Batman: The Animated Series,” which translates to more of that iconic noir 1940s aesthetic with an even darker edge. In the video, Timm would note that the original animated series saw some censorship in terms of content, but not anymore.

“It goes back to the original principles of the show we came up within the 1990s… But at the time, there were limitations on what we could do with adult content and adult themes. Now I can say, ‘Ok, it’s the 1990s again, and I can do what I want to do,” said Timm.
