Marvel’s Hawkeye mixes darkness with absurdity, says directors

November 9, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Hawkeye series is being marketed as the MCU’s take on a Shane Black-style buddy-cop action-comedy, but given the last time we saw Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton was at the tail end of a violent, murderous crusade against the criminal underworld, it will come as little surprise to hear that the Disney+ show isn’t going to be a completely light-hearted Christmas caper.

As we saw in Avengers: Endgame, Clint spent much of his time post-Snap slicing up mobsters, criminals and lowlifes in his Ronin persona, and directors Bert & Bertie have revealed to GamesRadar that the series will explore the impact of Barton’s actions, giving Hawkeye a unique tone that mixes darkness with absurdity.

“[Jeremy Renner] wanted the darkness. He wanted to go there. And there are moments that the Ronin Clint resurfaces. It’s very important to have those depths that you can explore so that he can come out of it,” said Bert, with filmmaking partner Bertie adding: “I think that Jeremy was on board from the get-go with the tone of the show being not super serious the whole time; the slight absurdity of it and that buddy-cop dynamic.”

Meanwhile, as we await the premiere of Hawkeye later this month, the official Marvel Studios Twitter accounts has shared a new promo for the series; check it out here…

Former Avenger Clint Barton has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas. Possible? Maybe with the help of Kate Bishop, a 22-year-old archer with dreams of becoming a Super Hero. The two are forced to work together when a presence from Barton’s past threatens to derail far more than the festive spirit.

Hawkeye sees Jeremy Renner returning as Clint Barton alongside Hailee Steinfeld (Bumblebee) as Kate Bishop, Florence Pugh (Black Widow) as Yelena Belova, Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) as Eleanor Bishop, Fra Fee (Les Miserables) as Kazi, Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul) as Jack Duquesne, Zahn McClarnon (Fargo) as William Lopez and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.

Hawkeye will premiere on Disney+ on November 24th.
