The Matrix Resurrections co-writer says it’s “certainly” not just another sequel

November 24, 2021 by Liam Waddington

With audiences being just one month away from the highly anticipated release of The Matrix Resurrections, the co-writer of the film David Mitchell has teased what fans can expect from the next instalment.

In a recent interview, Mitchell stated that the upcoming fourth instalment in the sci-fi action franchise is not a retread of what’s come before or just another sequel as the filmmakers are attempting to subvert the “rules of blockbusters.”

“I saw the film in Berlin in September. It’s really good. I cannot tell you what this film is about, but I could explain what it is not. It’s certainly not yet one more sequel, but something autonomous that contains however the three Matrix that preceded in a really ingenious way. It’s a very beautiful and weird creation. It also achieves a couple of things that we do not see in action films, meaning it subverts the rules of blockbusters.”

While plot details are still being kept under wraps, the official trailer hints that The Matrix Resurrections follows Neo (Keanu Reeves) who is possibly trapped inside a newer version of the Matrix where he is reunited with Trinity (Carrie Anne Moss) and a seemingly younger-looking Morpheus (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

Twenty years after the first film, the franchise that helped define pop culture at the turn of the century is back for a continuation and extension of the original movie. The Matrix remains in the zeitgeist as a film that has changed the way we look at cinema and reality itself. With its game-changing action and visual effects, The Matrix helped pave the way for films to follow.”

The Matrix Resurrections reunites director Lana Wachowski with original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss alongside Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman), Jessica Henwick (Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens), Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter), Neil Patrick Harris (Gone Girl), Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Quantico), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family), Telma Hopkins (Dead to Me), Eréndira Ibarra (Sense8), Toby Onwumere (Empire), Max Riemelt (Sense8), Brian J. Smith (Treadstone), and Jada Pinkett Smith (Angel Has Fallen).

The Matrix Resurrections is set for release on December 22nd 2021.
