Tom Burke replaces Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in Mad Max spinoff Furiosa

December 1, 2021 by Liam Waddington

Tom Burke (Mank) has joined Warner Bros. and George Miller’s Furiosa, the spinoff to Mad Max: Fury Road. Burke has replaced Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who had to part ways with the project due to scheduling conflicts.

The film marks the first major studio film for Burke, who played Orson Welles in Netflix’s Mank and has credits including True Things, 2020’s The Show and Netflix’s hit historical drama series The Crown. Burke will be starring alongside Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Last Night in Soho) as Furiosa, taking over the role from Charlize Theron, and Chris Hemsworth.

Mad Max: Furiosa is currently scheduled to begin filming in New South Wales in the new year with production expecting to be the biggest ever in Australia, with Deadline reporting that it will inject over $350 million AUD (around $257 million USD) into the local economy as well as creating more than 850 jobs. The prequel was initially set to open on June 23rd 2023 but has recently been pushed back to May 24th 2024.
