Benedict Cumberbatch predicts No Way Home-level success for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

March 14, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

Benedict Cumberbatch is certainly on a hot streak at the moment, what with Spider-Man: No Way Home obliterating the box office to the tune of $1.88 billion and Netflix’s The Power of the Dog picking up awards left, right and centre as we head towards the Oscars.

We’ve barely had a break from the (former) Sorcerer Supreme, but Cumberbatch is set to make a swift return to the MCU this May as Marvel Studios blows open the doors of the multiverse with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – and the film’s star is making some very bold predictions for the sequel.

“It’s a big, big movie,” Cumberbatch tells Empire. “It’s going to be an absolute riot. And if it brings off the level of ambition it’s got, we’re going to have a success on the level of Spidey. There you go, I’ll put my flag in the sand.”

Although the first Doctor Strange movie “only” grossed $678 million back in 2016, the prospect of some crazy cameos/crossovers (such as an appearance from Patrick Stewart’s Professor X, as teased in the most recent trailer) and the potential for the film to be a game-changer in terms of the MCU’s status quo will surely see Multiverse of Madness topping that figure. Whether it will have enough in the tank to match Spidey though, well that’s another question… while we await the answer, check out a couple of new images from the film courtesy of Empire here…

In Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is directed by Sam Raimi and stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Benedict Wong (Wong), Rachel McAdams (Christine Palmer), Chiwetel Ejiofor (Mordo), (Nicodemus West) and Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) as well as MCU newcomer Xochitl Gomez (The Baby-Sitters Club) as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set for release on May 6th 2022.
