Kathryn Bigelow to direct Aurora for Netflix

April 4, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow looks set to get back behind the camera for the first time since 2017’s Detroit, with THR reporting that Netflix has tapped the director for an adaptation of Aurora, the upcoming novel from screenwriter David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Spider-Man).

The novel is described as exploring the collapse of social order against a catastrophic global power crisis, taking place after a solar storm knocks out most of humanity’s power grids, and follows “a divorced mother who must now do everything she can to protect her teenager and her estranged brother, a wealthy Silicon Valley CEO who has built a luxurious bunker in the desert for just such a disaster.”

Koepp is set to write the script for the adaptation, while Bigelow is attached to direct, as well as producing with her regular producing partner Greg Shapiro (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). Also on board to produce is Gavin Polone, who previously worked with Koepp on several of his directorial efforts including Stir of Echoes.

THR’s report goes on to state that the project is expected to be Bigelow’s next movie, although deals only came together this week and it is still in the very early stages of development.
