The Witcher season 3 begins production with synopsis and behind-the-scenes image

April 4, 2022 by Ricky Church

The third season of The Witcher has begun production. The official announcement came via Twitter with a behind the scenes photo of the lead trio of Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra and Freya Allen together on the set along with the official synopsis and the directors for the season.

The second season concluded with the true potential of Ciri’s mysterious powers being discovered and several of the kingdoms and political powers in the Continent set on capturing her as Geralt of Rivia and Yennefer vowing to protect her. The synopsis for the third season reads:

As monarchs, mages and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.

Netflix also announced the directors who will helm the eight-episode third season. Joining the series behind the camera are Stephen Surjik (Reacher), Gandja Monteiro (Brand New Cherry Flavor), Loni Peristere (American Horror Story) and Bola Ogun (Lucifer).

The first two seasons of The Witcher are available to watch on Netflix while the streamer also has a prequel anime The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf available as well. Also in production is The Witcher: Blood Origin, another prequel set 1200 years before the main series about the creation of the first Witcher, which is slated to premiere later this year.

The Witcher season 2 sees the return of Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Jodhi May, Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Adam Levy, MyAnna Buring, Mimi Ndiweni, Therica Wilson-Read, Emma Appleton, Eamon Farren, Joey Batey, Lars Mikkelsen, Royce Pierreson, Maciej Musiał, Wilson Radjou-Pujalte, and Anna Shaffe, alongside series newcomers Kim Bodnia as Vesemir, Yasen Atour as Coen, Agnes Bjorn as Vereena, Paul Bullion as Lambert, Aisha Fabienne Ross as Lydia, Kristofer Hivju as Nivellen, Mecia Simson as Francesca, Basil Eidenbenz as Eskel, and Rebecca Hanssen as Queen Meve.
