Yasmin Finney will play Rose in Doctor Who, announces Russell T. Davies

May 16, 2022 by EJ Moreno

“How can there be another Rose?” asks Russell T. Davies. We will find out in the upcoming Doctor Who series in 2023.

Today, we’ve learned that Yasmin Finney has been cast in the role of Rose, though little else is known about the character at the time of writing. Some rumors have said this Rose will be the daughter of Catherine Tate’s Donna Noble. Others say she’ll play a different version of the iconic companion Rose played by Billie Piper. Only time will tell, but fans are delighted to see Finney step in the role after her scene-stealing turn in Heartstopper.

For those who don’t know, Yasmin Finney is a trans actress. This landmark casting comes just a week after Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa was unveiled as the Fourteenth Doctor. It was also revealed yesterdaythat David Tennant and Catherine Tate are also returning for the anniversary celebrations.

“Life on Doctor Who gets brighter and wilder; how can there be another Rose?” says showrunner Russell T Davies. “You’ll find out in 2023, but it’s an absolute joy to welcome Yasmin to the Doctor Who set. We all fell in love with her in Heartstopper, one of those shows which changes the world – and now Yasmin can change the Whoniverse!”

Finney is currently shooting scenes as Rose to air in 2023 as Doctor Who celebrates its 60th anniversary. The actress gushed about the upcoming role in a statement:

“If anyone would have told 8-year-old Yasmin that one day she’d be part of this iconic show, I would have never in a million years believed them,” said Finney. “This show has a place in so many people’s hearts, so to be seen as a trans actress by the legend himself, Russell, has not only made my year, it’s made my life. I cannot wait to begin this journey and for you all to see how Rose blossoms. Get Ready.”
