Isabela Merced joins Sony’s Madame Web Marvel movie

June 4, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Transformers: The Last Knight and Dora the Explorer star Isabela Merced has become the latest addition to the cast of Sony’s Spider-Man universe spinoff movie Madame Web, Deadline has revealed.

Details on Merced’s role are being kept under wraps, but the actress joins the previously announced Dakota Johnson in the title role as the Marvel Comics character, along with Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Celeste O’Connor (Ghostbusters: Afterlife).

S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders) is directing Madame Web, which is based on the Marvel character of the same name, who is typically depicted in the comic books as an elderly blind woman with psychic abilities. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have written the script.

It’s unclear at this point how Sony and Clarkson plan to adapt the character, but it is said the project is being viewed as Sony’s version of Doctor Strange for the studio’s own shared Marvel universe alongside Tom Hardy’s Venom, Jared Leto’s Morbius, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter.

Isabela Merced is coming off last year’s animated movie Spirit Untamed and Jason Momoa action thriller Sweet Girl. She will next be seen in HBO Max’s Father of the Bride remake and Hulu and Disney+’s Rosaline.

Madame Web is set for release on July 7th 2023.
