Pixar’s Lightyear sets Disney+ streaming release date

July 21, 2022 by Amie Cranswick

After an enforced absence due to the pandemic which saw Soul, Luca and Turning Red skipping theatrical releases, Pixar returned to the big screen last month with Lightyear, a Toy Story spinoff featuring Chris Evans in the title role as Star Command Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear.

With just $214 million worldwide to date, Lightyear wasn’t exactly a triumphant return for the animation maestros in terms of box office success. However, fans who are still reluctant to make their return to cinemas just yet will soon have the opportunity to catch the film from the comfort of their own sofas as Disney has announced that it will be coming to Disney+ for all subscribers starting August 3rd.

“Lightyear looks amazing on the big screen, of course, but we are so excited to bring it to Disney+,” said director Angus MacLane. “We devoted years of our lives to this film and we are so proud of it. We want to share it with as many people as possible. Disney+ not only gives more fans an opportunity to see Lightyear, it gives us all the means to see it again and again.”

Here’s a look at the Disney+ poster for Lightyear, along with a new spot announcing its upcoming streaming release…

A sci-fi action adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.

Lightyear is currently in cinemas and arrives on Disney+ on August 3rd.
