Omar Sy to lead John Woo’s reimagining of The Killer

August 8, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Back in May it was announced that legendary Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo is bringing some Heroic Bloodshed to Peacock with an English-language reimagining of his action classic The Killer, and now comes word that Woo has found his lead for the remake.

As announced by Peacock and Universal, The Intouchables and Lupin star Omay Sy has signed on to lead the cast of the new film, which Woo is directing from a script by Matthew Stuecken and Josh Campbell (10 Cloverfield Lane), and Eran Creevy (Welcome to the Punch) and Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential).

Released in 1989, The Killer saw Woo directing Chow Yun-Fat as a disillusioned assassin who accepts one last hit in order to pay the medical expenses of a young girl who he accidentally blinded on his previous job. Plot details for the remake are being kept under wraps, although it will presumably follow a similar storyline.

Woo has been absent from Hollywood since 2003’s Paycheck starring Ben Affleck and Uma Thurman, but is set for a return with the dialogue-free action thriller Silent Night starring Joel Kinnaman, which is expected to release next year. He did previously have another iteration of The Killer remake lined up at Universal, with Lupita N’yongo signing on for the lead back in 2018
