Disney developing live-action King Kong origin series

August 24, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

While Apple are busy developing their own Titans TV show linked to the cinematic Monsterverse, Disney have decided to that they’d also like to cash in on Kong by announcing a live-action series based on the lovelorn ape’s origin on Skull Island.

According to Variety the series would be a serialised drama that would explore King Kong’s origins as well as the mysteries of his home, Skull Island, and be based on based on the original novel of King Kong written by Merian C. Cooper, as well some more recent novelisations created by artist Joe DeVito that were produced in conjunction with Cooper’s estate. It would not be linked in any way to the Monsterverse.

The series will be written by Stephany Folsom, who was behind the recent Amazon show Paper Girls, with James Wan, Michael Clear and Rob Hackett executive producing on behalf of Atomic Monster, along with Dannie Festa for World Builder Entertainment.

The iconic ape made his debut in 1933 classic King Kong, and has beaten his chest on the big-screen in numerous films since, including Peter Jackson’s 2005 remake, and most recently in 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong.
