James Gunn has finished writing the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screenplay

January 14, 2016 by Justin Cook

Originally published January 14, 2016. Updated April 14, 2018.

James Gunn took a major step forward in the pre-production stage of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 yesterday, as he finished the final draft of the film’s screenplay. The director announced the news on his Facebook and Instagram accounts by posting a picture of the script’s title page, which reveals that this is his fifth draft…

He mentioned all of the film’s main cast members in his Facebook post, saying that the script would soon be coming their way, while his Instagram post was accompanied with the caption, “So this is what happens when you take your brain between your hands and wring out its every last juice. Being sent out now.”

In case you were wondering, Gunn explained the different color assigned to each draft (as seen in the bottom right hand corner of the paper) by saying, “When a crew or cast member gets a screenplay, it is white. Every additional draft is assigned new colors so they get only the pages that changed printed on a new color, that they can insert, not the entire screenplay.”

Gunn directed 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy to impressive results and is undoubtedly looking to repeat the film’s success with the sequel. He has been dropping little bits of information here and there about what fans can expect from the superhero team’s next on-screen adventure, but for the most part, the contents of the script are being kept under wraps. The film will begin shooting in Atlanta, Georgia this February.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for release on April 28th 2017 in the UK and on May 5th in the States, with director James Gunn reuniting with returning cast members Chris Pratt (Star-Lord), Zoe Saldana (Gamora), Dave Bautista (Drax), Bradley Cooper (Rocket), Vin Diesel (Groot), Karen Gillan (Nebulda), Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin) alongside new addition Pom Klementieff (Oldboy).
