James McAvoy is open to X-Men return in the MCU as he praises First Class and Days of Future Past

November 30, 2022 by EJ Moreno

James McAvoy is a definitive superhero actor for a whole generation. His take on Charles Xavier in Fox’s X-Men movies delighted fans, and it also seems to be an amazing moment in time for the actor.

Speak to GQ UK for a new profile; the actor opens up about his time as Xavier and what it would mean to return to a role like that again, especially if that means he can show up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During his interview, McAvoy says he is not one to shut the door on returning as Charles Xavier if they were to show up in the MCU. “I’m very quick to say, ‘No, I’m done.’ Or ‘I’m not that bothered about coming back.’ Because you move forward,” says the actor. He stresses that the chance has not arrived yet, though, “I’ve definitely not got the call [from Kevin Feige]. And if I did, I would definitely not be telling you.”

His willingness to return to the X-Men brand should come as no surprise since former Professor X enjoyed his time as the iconic mutant. He tells the publication that filming the first two films was some of his favorite times in Hollywood.

“It was one of the most positive experiences I’ve had with a studio, says McAvoy to GQ UK. “I don’t really [see them as just] money gigs. Days of Future Past, I think, is one of the better films that I’ve been involved in.”

While he did enjoy films his X-Men movies, he does note they lacked one crucial thing: the true Charles and Erik bond we all needed. “My biggest criticism of what we did throughout the four movies was that after the first movie, we didn’t take advantage of the relationship between [Xavier and Fassbender’s Magneto], which really formed the backbone of the first film. So it was like, why did we just eject that massive weapon?”
