Jack Champion talks about the “hard left turn” of Avatar 3 and how Scream VI is the most brutal yet

December 21, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

If you’re one of the many people who’ve contributed to Avatar: The Way of Water‘s almost half-a-billion dollar haul since it opened last week, then you’ll have spotted that there is a decidedly non-Na’vi looking character hanging out with the Sully clan on Pandora. That’d be Spider, played by Avengers: Endgame‘s Jack Champion, and he has been talking about his pivotal role in James Cameron’s blockbuster, and how he was very shocked by what’s coming in Avatar 3.

Champion wrapped on Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar 3, and the first act of Avatar 4 by the time he was 16, so has been reflecting on the process during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, in which he talks in detail about some of the big decisions his character has to make in the film (which we won’t go into here for fear of SPOILERS), but also spoke about what the future holds for the blockbuster franchise.

When asked about his first reaction when he read Avatar 3 he replied “I was very shocked by it. It just takes a hard left turn, and that’s not a bad thing. You think you know where it’s going, but then a wrecking ball comes. So you’re completely like, “Oh wow, I never thought that would’ve happened.” You also see more regions of Pandora, and you get introduced to more cultures. So I think it’s even better than Avatar 2. Collectively, they’ll each get better.”

Following his appearance in Avengers: Endgame and Avatar, the young American actor clearly likes a franchise, because he also went on to tease another of his forthcoming blockbusters in Scream VI, about which he said the teaser trailer made him “scream with excitement” adding “I don’t even know if I’m allowed to say this, but Scream VI might be the most brutal Scream yet, just as far as the killing goes.”

You can read the full interview here, in which he speaks about what it was like filming with James Cameron, his relationship with his co-stars, and how long he can hold his breath underwater.

Avatar: The Way of Water is directed by James Cameron and sees Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Matt Gerald, Dileep Rao, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles from the 2009 blockbuster, while new additions to the cast include Kate Winslet, Oona Chaplin, Cliff Curtis, Britain Dalton, Filip Geljo, Jamie Flatters, Bailey Bass, Trinity Bliss, Jack Champion, Duane Evans Jr., Edie Falco, Brendan Cowell, Michelle Yeoh, Jemaine Clement, Keston John, and CJ Jones.

Avatar: The Way of Water is currently playing in cinemas worldwide.
