HBO’s The Last of Us Part II to span multiple seasons

March 13, 2023 by Ricky Church

With The Last of Us ending its first season with a stunning and emotional finale last night, eyes no look to the future as The Last of Us Part II will be adapted next. In an interview with GQ, show creators Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin revealed fans will have much more to look forward to than just a second season as the sequel will span multiple seasons.

The Last of Us Part II is roughly double the length of the first game with an even larger cast, making a single-season adaptation a tall order. Druckmann and Mazin realized this with Mazin stating there is “no way” Part II will be one season.

Druckmann, who is the co-president of Last of Us developer Naughty Dog, acknowledged that even with multiple seasons to cover the sequel, some changes will have to be made much as they did with certain story or character aspects throughout the first season. “Some of the stuff I’m most excited for [in Part II] are the changes we’ve discussed and seeing the story come to life again in this other version,” Druckmann said. “And I think it’s exciting because it leans into those feelings you had from the game, really heavily, in a new way.”

“I think we know what we’re doing on this one, Mazin continued. “I’m not saying that in snarky way, I’m saying that in a hopeful way. There are going to be things that are going to be different, and there are things that are going to be identical. There are things that are going to be added and enriched. There are some things that are going to be flipped. Our goal remains exactly what it was for the first season, which is to deliver a show that makes fans happy. We’ve got an incredible returning cast. It’s a daunting task. But Jesus, so was the first season. You can’t make everyone happy. But we’ve made a lot of people happy and that’s our intention to do it again.”

The Last of Us Part II was released in 2020 to rave reviews for its innovative story and gameplay. Though a third part to the series has yet to be announced, it is likely in early development but also years away from being released. The second season of The Last of Us is also likely a couple years away from releasing on HBO.
