Gotham showrunner talks Mr. Freeze and Hugo Strange

January 28, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With the second half of Gotham season two being billed as ‘Wrath of the Villains’, two iconic bad guys from the Batman Rogues Gallery are set to make their mark when the show returns this February in Mr. Freeze (Nathan Darrow) and Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong). Speaking to TV Guide, showrunner Bruno Heller has spoken about both villains, and how they’ll be portrayed on the Batman prequel series.

“We’re taking it back to the roots of the origin story,” said Heller with regards to Dr. Victor Fries. “It’s about him and his wife before he became a bad guy, how he became a bad guy. It’s very much a story of the heart rather than a story about technology and super-villainy. It’s a doomed romance. It will make people cry.”

“[Hugo Strange] is very much not a ‘mwa-ha-ha’ villain,” Heller continues. “He is a man filled with the joys of science. He doesn’t think of himself in any way as a bad person. He is the essence of scientific progress and the joy of hope for the future that science promises. He shows us how even that sensibility can be warped into something evil if wrongly used.”

Gotham returns to Fox on February 29th. Follow all of our coverage here.
