James Mangold reacts to negative Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny reviews

June 25, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

When Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny made its eagerly awaited debut at the Cannes Film Festival the response was decidedly mixed, and now that even more reviews are swinging online in anticipation of its June 28th release, director James Mangold has been addressing the negative responses.

Mangold, who inherited the megaphone from Steven Spielberg, was speaking with Variety about Harrison Ford’s fifth and final outing as Indiana Jones, tackling everything from the digital de-aging process, to the weight of expectation at taking over such a beloved franchise, when the subject turned towards Dial of Destiny‘s post-Cannes reception.

Mangold said “When you’re in franchise land, it’s very hard for critical thinkers” — meaning journalists — “to overlook what I’m sure their editors want, which is this business prism of how does it rate to the other ones? I always thought if I were second or third best to one of the greatest films of all time, I’d be good. I mean, it all vaporizes later. Either the movie will live or it won’t.”

For the record, here at Flickering Myth our Dial of Destiny is split right down the middle, with a ★★★★ review claiming that “runaway rickshaws, rickety bridges, and Phoebe Waller-Bridge ensure that Harrison Ford hangs up his hat in whip-cracking fashion”, while our video review (see below) is a lot less forgiving.

Ultimately you can make up your own minds, because that’s what really matters, when Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is released next week. Let us know whether you’re planning on joining Dr. Jones for one final adventure by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…

Directed by James Mangold, the film is produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel, with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas serving as executive producers. John Williams, who has scored each Indy adventure since the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” in 1981, is once again composing the score.

Starring along with Harrison Ford are Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”), Antonio Banderas (“Pain and Glory”), John Rhys-Davies (“Raiders of the Lost Ark”), Shaunette Renee Wilson (“Black Panther”), Thomas Kretschmann (“Das Boot”), Toby Jones (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom”), Boyd Holbrook (“Logan”), Oliver Richters (“Black Widow”), Ethann Isidore (“Mortel”) and Mads Mikkelsen (“Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore”).

Indiana Jones final adventure begins when Dial of Destiny lands in cinemas on June 30th, 2023.
