Mortal Kombat 2 will see Baraka enter the fight

June 28, 2023 by Ricky Church

With Mortal Kombat 2 having begun production in Queensland, Australia, the film’s producer Todd Garner has revealed a new character added to the film’s cast pulled from the list of the franchise’s fan-favourite characters. Fans will get ready to see the vicious Baraka in the upcoming sequel.

Garner announced Baraka’s role on Twitter by sharing a photo of an on-set chair with his name on it, but did not reveal who might be playing the villain. Baraka, who was introduced in the Mortal Kombat II video game in 1993, is a loyal servant to Outworld’s emperor Shao Kahn and general to the Tarkatan Horde. Apart from his monstrous appearance, his most notable trait is two long, sharp blades come out of his forearms for combat.

Baraka is also the father to the half-Tarkatan Mileena, who was played in the first film by Sisi Stringer as one of Shang Tsung’s enforcers hunting the Earthrealm fighters. However, Mileena was killed by Sonya Blade and could potentially serve as motivation for Baraka’s role as the Mortal Kombat tournament officially begins.

Mortal Kombat 2 will see much of the first film’s cast return. Starring in the sequel will be Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Josh Lawson as Kano, Tadanobu Asano as Lord Raiden, Mehcad Brooks as Jax, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot in a new form of Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion and Max Huang as Kung Lao.

New additions to the franchise include Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Martyn Ford as the emperor Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Sindel and Damon Herriman as Quan Chi.

Simon McQuoid returns to the director’s chair with a screenplay by Moon Knight’s Jeremy Slater. The sequel is aiming for a mid-late 2024 or early 2025 release.
