Blue Beetle director confirms Green Lantern Easter egg

August 24, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Blue Beetle isn’t as isolated of a DC Studios project as you think as director Angel Manuel Soto has confirmed the film connects to another cosmic DC character.

In a recent interview, Soto lets fans in on the little secret that Green Lantern briefly appears at the film’s beginning.

“There are a lot of Easter Eggs. I always say, if you watch it a second time or even three times, you’re gonna find different Easter Eggs every single time because they’re very minimal,” Soto tells Heroic Hollywood. “Do you notice the green beam in the title sequence? That’s the Green Lantern. See? You’ll have to see it again!”

For those who missed it, in this very quick scene, the Blue Beetle scarab is seen flying through space, bumping into a glowing green object. That object is reportedly a Lantern itself or the ring that fuels the Lantern’s powers.

Repeat viewing is needed for Blue Beetle as the film opened with the second-lowest domestic DC debut at the box office. At the time of reporting, the film is nearing its second weekend with just $49 million worldwide.

This news that a Green Lantern Easter egg appears could drive some extra viewings for diehard DCU fans but will likely do little to intrigue the wider public.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle stars Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood), Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario), Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), George Lopez (Rio), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).
