Doctor Who: Once and Future continues with The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50

September 14, 2023 by Andrew Newton

Big Finish Productions has released a new all-star audio adventure for their Doctor Who anniversary series, Once and Future.  The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50, written by Jonathan Barnes, brings a new adventure for the Tenth Doctor… or maybe the First Doctor…

In The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50 the First Doctor arrives in Victorian London amid a Martian invasion.  Before he can react to Missy’s appearance he is propelled into his future Tenth incarnation and must face Missy and her Martian invaders.

The Doctor isn’t alone in his fight, however, and is soon joined by The Paternoster Gang (run by the Silurian Madame Vastra, her human assistant Jenny Flint and Strax), but whether they can help with the Doctor’s degeneration mystery is anyone’s guess.

David Tennant once again plays the excellent Tenth Doctor, Michelle Gomez once more becomes the villainous Missy and they are joined by Neve McIntosh as Madame Vastra, Catrin Stewart as Jenny Flint and Dan Starkey as Strax.

Writer Jonathan Barnes said: “I always try to include a personal element in my stories so I was pleased to be able to write a sort of love letter to the work of HG Wells as well as the required ingredients.  It’s a commentary on fandom too in some ways. The Doctor lands on a planet which seems to have been remodelled as an exact replica of the fictional London in Wells’s War of the Worlds… but who could be responsible for such devilry?”

Doctor Who – Once and Future: The Martian Invasion of Planetoid 50 can be purchased from the Big Finish website for £8.99 as a digital download or a single disc collector’s edition CD (plus the download) for £10.99.
