First look at Angelina Jolie in Pablo Larraín’s Maria Callas biopic

October 9, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Pablo Larraín, he of brilliant biopics Jackie and Diana, has unveiled a first-look at Angelina Jolie in his latest retrospective of a female icon, Maria.

Maria, a film about the life of American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas, has been written by Peaky Blinders creator and Spencer scribe Steven Knight, and is based on true accounts to tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

Filming is about to get underway, with shooting taking place over eight weeks in Paris, Greece, Budapest and Milan. Maria also stars Pierfrancesco Favino (World War Z), Alba Rohrwacher (Perfect Strangers), Haluk Bilginer (Winter Sleep), Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Power of the Dog) and Valeria Golino (Portrait of a Lady on Fire).
