The V/H/S horror franchise heads to the world of sci-fi for seventh instalment

October 15, 2023 by EJ Moreno

V/H/S has scared the pants off horror lovers for over a decade with its mix of found footage horror and splatter movie homages.

But with its upcoming seventh installment, the Shudder franchise is looking to change the formula by introducing severe sci-fi elements. The streamer announced at the ongoing New York Comic Con that the next film will feature five stories heavily inspired by the world of science fiction and tech horror.

No filmmakers have been announced at this time, but the streamer notes they’ll look to debut the film in 2024.

“The V/H/S franchise has been terrifying and entertaining audiences for over a decade now thanks to the work of some of the genre’s most gifted filmmakers,” said Head of AMC Networks’ Film Group Scott Shooman. “Following the massive success of V/H/S/85 and its previous installments on Shudder, it’s clear that the filmmaking team won’t be running out of unique ideas anytime soon. We’re thrilled that the franchise is going in a bold, new direction that will surprise fans and newcomers alike and demonstrate the innovative capabilities of sci-fi within the world of V/H/S.”

“Jason Voorhees, Leprechaun, Pinhead, Dracula, even the Amityville Horror house ended up in space, so as we move into our own Part 7, it was only natural that we should too,” said producer Josh Goldbloom. “The sci-fi horror genre provides us an infinite playground of forbidden worlds and dangerous lifeforms, a formula which we’re confident will lead to the biggest, maddest, bloodiest V/H/S ever.”

As mentioned by Goldbloom, V/H/S is not the first horror franchise to get a bit tech-based, as Jason X and Leprechaun 4: In Space stand out as notable entries for both franchises. Even V/H/S has dipped its toes into sci-fi with V/H/S 2 and V/H/S/94 featuring very innovative entries.

The latest entry, V/H/S/85, saw some genre-pushing storytelling as well. Check out our review of the film below…

An ominous mixtape blends never-before-seen snuff footage with nightmarish newscasts and disturbing home video to create a surreal, analog mashup of the forgotten 80s.

The directorial names for this new entry are iconic in modern-day horror, including David Bruckner (Hellraiser, The Night House), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone, Sinister), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell, Culture Shock), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike Nelson (Wrong Turn).

V/H/S/85 is now streaming on Shudder.
