Five Nights At Freddy’s tipped for $50 million domestic box office opening

October 25, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Universal and Blumhouse’s years in the making adaptation of popular videogame Five Nights At Freddy’s is set to make an impressive debut at the North American box-office this weekend, with industry experts pegging an opening above $50 million.

In news as surprising as one of the many jump scares that populate the horror survival video game, Deadline reports that Five Nights At Freddy’s will more than double its production budget of $20 million when the film is released this weekend, making it the second-best domestic box office opening of the fall behind Taylor Swift’s all-conquering Eras Tour concert movie.

This is all the more impressive when you consider that Five Nights At Freddy’s is a simultaneous theatrical day-and-date release on Peacock, albeit on one of the streamer’s premium packages. Even if this means the opening ends up being frontloaded, or comes in under estimates, the fact that presales have already exceeded those of M3GAN ($30.4 million opening) indicates that this is going to deliver unexpected results at the box-office.

Five Nights At Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Piper Rubio, Elizabeth Lail, Mary Stuart Masterson, Lucas Grant, Kat Conner Sterling and Jessica Blackmore.

The movie follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.

Five Nights At Freddy’s will be released in theaters and streaming on Peacock on October 27th.
