Brendan Fraser joins a Rental Family for new Searchlight film

November 21, 2023 by Ricky Church

The Brenaissance continues as Deadline reports Brendan Fraser has found his next role. After winning the Best Actor award for his stunning performance in The Whale and starring the recently released, and likely next Oscars contender, Killers of the Flower Moon, Fraser will star next in Rental Family from Searchlight with Beef‘s Hikari directing.

Rental Family follows Fraser as “a down-and-out actor living in Tokyo who is hired as a token American guy for a Japanese rental-family company, leading him on an unexpected journey of self-discovery through the roles he plays in other people’s lives.” Hikari co-wrote the script with Stephen Blahut. Hikari will produce alongside Shin Yamaguchi with Eddie Vaisman and Julia Lebedev from Sight Unseen Productions. Blahut will executive produce with Tomo Koizumi and Searchlight’s Taylor Friedman and Daniel Yu.

Fraser has been a beloved actor for several of his hit movies in the mid-90s to mid-00s, from George of the Jungle, Encino Man, Airheads, Blast from the Past, Bedazzled and many more. The role he’s most known for is Rick O’Connell in the 1999 remake of Universal’s classic monster movie The Mummy, a role he reprised for its two sequels The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

His career came to a halt after being sexually assaulted and blacklisted by the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which led to a number of issues in his personal life where for several years he rarely appeared in any film or TV production. His career began to be revitalized in the wake of the Me Too movement where he got a starring role in the DC HBO Max series Doom Patrol as well as Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move. Fraser also portrayed the Batman villain Firefly in Batgirl, which was infamously cancelled for a tax write-off by Warner Bros. after it had completed filming.

Rental Family will begin production next spring.
