Francis Lawrence to direct Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk

December 2, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Out on the promotional rounds for his latest film The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes [read our review here], director Francis Lawrence has confirmed to Business Insider that he’s now attached to the long-gestating feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Long Walk.

Based on King’s 1979 novel, published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym, The Long Walk takes place in a dystopian America where 100 teenagers are selected to take part in an annual walking contest where they have to maintain a speed of four miles per hour until only one is left standing.

The last update on the project came in 2019 when it was announced that The Autopsy of Jane Doe and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark director André Øvredal would tackle the adaptation, although he revealed during press for this year’s The Last Voyage of the Demeter that he was no longer attached.

Whether Lawrence will be the man to get The Long Walk underway remains to be seen, as he’s also attached to several other projects including Constantine 2 and an adaptation of the BioShock video game series. Meanwhile, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is currently in cinemas now.
