Reese Witherspoon confirms Big Little Lies Season 3 is in development

January 9, 2024 by Ricky Church

Get ready for more Big Little Lies as series star Reese Witherspoon has confirmed a third season is in development.

Premiering on HBO in 2017, Big Little Lies was an adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s 2014 novel and starred Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern and Zoë Kravitz in the lead roles. It was meant to be just a miniseries, but it proved so successful that HBO ordered a second season that would continue the story past Moriarty’s novel, further exploring the lives of these women in the fallout of the first season.

Big Little Lies followed a group of women living in the rich and closely-knit town of Monterey, California who find themselves caught up in a homicide investigation as all the lies between them and their families begin to unravel. The second season focused on the aftermath of the homicide investigation and how it affected each of their lives even as further revelations are made.

During the Golden Globes, Witherspoon spoke to Variety on the red carpet and confirmed that a third season is in development. “We are working on it. Nic and I have been working on it a lot,” Witherspoon said. While brief, her statement does confirm more Big Little Lies is coming after the second season aired in 2019. The lengthy wait between seasons is likely due to Witherspoon and Kidman’s busy schedules as they have led new series, not to mention the Covid lockdowns preventing many productions getting off the ground for much of 2020 and 2021.

Witherspoon currently stars in Apple TV+’s hit drama The Morning Show while Kidman has starred in Nine Perfect Strangers, another adaptation of Moriarty’s novels which has also been greenlit for a second season, Special Ops: Lioness, Expats and Faraway Downs, a miniseries remake of her, Hugh Jackman and Baz Luhrman’s Australia. That’s without mentioning Kidman’s additional move schedule which has seen her in Being The Ricardos, The Northman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Big Little Lies also starred Alexander Skarsgård, Adam Scott, Katheryn Newton, James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling and Meryl Streep.
