Star Trek: Section 31 movie begins filming as cast announced

January 30, 2024 by Ricky Church

After several years in development, the special TV film Star Trek: Section 31 has begun filming with Michelle Yeoh reprising her Star Trek: Discovery role as Emperor Philippa Georgiou who, after crossing over from the Mirror Universe, has now joined Federation’s infamous Section 31 black ops division. Additionally, Paramount has announced the full cast who will star alongside Yeoh in the film.

Joining Star Trek: Section 31 is Omari Hardwick (Power), Kacey Rohl (Hannibal), Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso), Sven Ruygrok (One Piece), Robert Kazinsky (Pacific Rim), Humberly Gonzalez (Ginny & Georgia) and James Hiroyuki Liao (Barry).

The logline for the film reads “Tasked with protecting the United Federation of Planets, Georgiou also must face the sins of her past.”

Star Trek: Section 31 was originally envisioned as another Star Trek series, but since morphed into a special TV film event for the franchise. Section 31 was first introduced in Deep Space Nine as a clandestine organization who protected the Federation’s interests by any means necessary, often clashing with the moral values Starfleet represented to the point where they’re almost considered entirely separate from the Federation. They have made further appearances in Star Trek: Enterprise and Discovery as well as the second film of the new film series Star Trek Into Darkness.

“And we’re off to the races! Thrilled to report principal photography has started on Star Trek: Section 31,” said executive producer Alex Kurtzman. “We welcome our incredible cast of new characters as they join our beloved Michelle Yeoh on her next wild adventure across the ‘Trek’ universe.”

Star Trek: Section 31 was written by Craig Sweeny (Limitless) with Olatunde Osunsanmi (Star Trek: Discovery) directing. The pair will executive produce alongside Yeoh, Alex Kurtzman, Aaron Baiers, Rod Rodenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa and John Weber.

Star Trek: Section 31 is filming now in Toronto.
