Bryan Fuller signs on as showrunner for Star Trek TV series

February 9, 2016 by Ricky Church

Star Trek’s new mission to go boldly where no man has gone before has found its new captain in Bryan Fuller. Fuller is set is showrun CBS’ new Star Trek series, set to air in 2017.

The Hannibal and Pushing Daisies producer actually got his start in the television industry writing for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager. This will be a return to his beginnings as he brings back the sci-fi series to television. In a statement, Fuller said:

“My very first experience of Star Trek is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the Star Trek universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of Star Trek with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no Star Trek series has gone before.”

Alex Kurtzman, writer and producer of the Star Trek reboot and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, will be the executive producer on this new series. He also had this to say about Fuller’s hiring:

“Bringing Star Trek back to television means returning it to its roots, and for years those roots flourished under Bryan’s devoted care. His encyclopedic knowledge of Trek canon is surpassed only by his love for Gene Roddenberry’s optimistic future, a vision that continues to guide us as we explore strange new worlds.”

While its great to see Fuller returning to the franchise that launched his career, this also means he will have a very busy schedule for the next several years. As well as Star Trek, Fuller will be showrunning Starz’s American Gods, an adaptation of author Neil Gaiman’s famous book, and developing a reboot of Amazing Stories for NBC.

Not much is know about the Star Trek at the moment, but it will apparently focus on new characters and locations set apart from the franchise’s main characters and mythology. It will be airing on CBS in January 2017 before moving exclusively to the CBS All Access digital subscription service.
