Adam Sandler rumoured to be teeing up a Happy Gilmore sequel

March 23, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

A sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 comedy-classic Happy Gilmore is reportedly being teed-up by the actor.

According to Christopher McDonald, who played Gilmore’s super-smug arch-nemesis Shooter McGavin in the movie, a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2 has been written.

McDonald was speaking on Audacy’s 92.3’s The Fan when he revealed that he “saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this’, I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”

He did go on to joke that his comments should be cut from the show because “I don’t want to be a liar”, but then doubled-down by adding “he did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”

Sources close to Deadline claim that the sequel will be for Netflix, where Sandler has a lucrative deal, but neither the streaming giants or Sandler has commented on the reports.

The Denis Dugan sports flick was released in 1996 and told the story of Happy Gilmore, a young man who dreams of being a professional hockey player, but soon discovers he may actually have a talent for playing an entirely different sport: golf. So with his powerful driving skills and foulmouthed attitude, he becomes an unlikely and controversial golf hero.

A key part of Sandler’s rise to becoming one of the 90s highest grossing box-office stars, Happy Gilmore was released by Universal Pictures and went on to gross $82 million at the worldwide box office. The comedy also starred Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen and the late, great Carl Weathers as Happy’s coach Chubbs Peterson.
